The
Episcopal Church, like other churches, has long struggled with the question of how to
relate to homosexuals. I had been thinking about arguments advanced by opposing
camps, when I realized that I had never written a
limerick. Somehow, these two lines of thought came together in the limerick
above, which was written 7/21/2000.
In an earlier commentary, I was apologetic about the meter of this
poem, particularly that of the
fourth line. On reconsideration, however, I decided that the third line
was actually the problematic one. I corrected this problem on 10/4/2005
with the addition of “I” to the line.
