Lullaby

by Lionel E. Deimel

The sun has set;

The moon appears;

The time is past

For cries and tears.

Planets and stars

Bedeck the sky;

The time for sleep

At last is nigh.

So quiet be,

And rest your head;

Relax your limbs

Upon your bed,

And go to sleep,

Perchance to dream,

When visions are

Not what they seem.

Tomorrow is

Another day

For learning things

And happy play.

There is no need

For any fear,

And know that I’ll

Be always here.

My new grandson is just over seven months old. I thought I would write a lullaby for him. The first two lines occurred to me as I was walking home from church today. The poem took the form above after an afternoon’s work a few final edits.

The lullaby is, of course, dedicated to my grandson, Tobias René Deimel Flum Wagner. The poem was written 12/31/2023.

I wrote a tune for this lullaby, though it may have lacked infant appeal. (You can hear that melody here.) A friend told me of a lullaby her mother sang using a tune in the Episcopal hymnal. This led me to search a metrical index for Hymnal 1982.  The search led me to “Coventry Carol,” which is too long and varied but which provided a backbone for an alternate tune for my poem. Naturally, a lullaby will not be sung to an infant in four-part harmony, but you can listen to a four-part rendition on my music for “Lullaby” here. The melody is shown below. I finished the tune 1/3/2024.
