Canadian Wildfires

by Lionel E. Deimel

The sky is yellow;

Wildfire smoke obscures my view;

I blame Canada.

For the second day, the air quality in Clifton Springs is awful due to wildfires in Canada. The situation is even worse in New York City and elsewhere. Looking out my window, I thought of writing a haiku.

My mind immediately went to the song “Blame Canada” from the film South Park: Bigger, Longer & Uncut. “Blame Canada” is only four syllables, however, making it unsuitable for the third line of my poem. I then decided to make the poem more personal—I substituted “my” for “one’s” in the second line—which allowed my be prefix “I” to “blame Canada.”
